Operation Gratitude Drive
For the
fourth consecutive year, the Chaminade High School Athletic Department
along with the Student Athlete Council will be coordinating an effort to
show our appreciation for U.S. troops that are deployed in countries
around the world. The drive is know as "Operation Gratitude" and is a
great way to give thanks to those sacrificing for our country. To
support this cause, we will put collection boxes in the lobby of
Chaminade Hall, the lobby of the High School main office, and the High
School Athletic Department office. Anyone can support this cause so if
you have friends outside of Chaminade, they are welcome to contribute.
Below is a list of suggested items that can be donated. Please note that
any cards or letters to the troops must be placed in an unsealed
envelope. Those of you wishing to donate money to help with delivery of
the care packages may do that also by giving checks made payable to
Operation Gratitude or cash. You may also donate your time to the
organization by going to the Van Nuys Armory to help with assembling the
packages to be sent abroad. You can get more information by visiting the

Middle School Iowa Test
of Basic Skills
Dear
middle school parents,
This week
all students will begin the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).
Testing will begin on Wednesday, October 1, and continue through
Thursday, October 2. Sixth graders will have an additional day of
testing on Friday, October 3. The main purpose of this test
is to provide information that can be used to improve instruction.
Sixth
grade students will be given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on
Friday, October 3. The CogAT measures the student’s ability to
learn in school. Though standardized achievement scores cannot and
should not replace teacher observations and classroom assessments, these
scores do provide us with supplementary information that is useful in
designing or choosing instructional materials and creating an effective
learning environment.
Students
will begin testing at 8:00 each morning. A snack and drink will be
provided during break. Seventh and eighth grade students will
follow a regular half day schedule on Friday, October 3.
School
will dismiss at noon on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; however, after
school care will be available each day.
You can
help your child’s performance on these tests by adhering to the
following suggestions:
-
Have
your child at school on time on all testing days.
-
Make
sure your child has a supply of sharpened number two pencils, a good
eraser and a free reading book.
-
Help
your child to understand the importance of using their allotted time
by double checking for careless mistakes.
-
See
that your child is rested each day by enforcing a reasonable bedtime
schedule.
-
Encourage your child to eat a nutritious breakfast.
-
Be
certain your child remembers to bring his/her glasses (if
necessary).
-
Send
your child to school each day in a healthy frame of mind.
Stress the importance of the tests and doing one’s best; however, be
careful not to create anxiety in your child.
Thank you
for your continued support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Kane
Academic Assistant Principal

Chaminade
named
in
Los
Angeles
Magazine's
“LA’s
Best
High
Schools”
In its annual rankings of
the more than 550 public and
private schools in Los
Angeles County, Los Angeles
Magazine ranked Chaminade as
one of the top 20 best
academically performing
private institutions in
Southern California.
The top private schools were
selected using a statistical
analysis based on the
following variables:
student-teacher ratio,
percentage of students going
to college, dropout rate,
advanced placement ratio
(this ratio represents the
number of AP sections
offered, divided by the
number of graduates) and
average SAT scores.
The distinction is
particularly affirming to
our school community as our
tuition was among the lowest
of all schools on the list,
while our AP offerings and
student-to-teacher ratio
remain very competitive.
Congratulations
to the entire Chaminade
family on this most
prestigious honor!

High School Robotics Team
Shares Skills in Hawaii, New
Zealand

The
students from the Eagle Engineering team spent summer vacation teaching
robotics in Hawaii and New Zealand. Their
goal was to empower teachers and students to start competitive robotics
programs, aiming to encourage more students to pursue studies in
engineering, math, science and technology.
Invited back to Hawaii for the second time, the
team worked with students and teachers from more than 34 different
schools attending workshops hosted at Chaminade University and the
University of Hawaii. To help jump start the FIRST Robotics program in
New Zealand, the team worked with nearly 1,000 students, 150 teachers
and 100 engineers. Topics taught in Hawaii and New Zealand included
safety, drive systems, rookie workshop, team spirit, team organization
and finance, strategy, arms and lifts, pneumatics, CAD, animation and
system engineering.
